The XT 550 was Yamaha's big-bore four-valve trail single of the early 1980s, a 558 cc air-cooled kick-start machine. It sat between the older XT 500 and the 595 cc XT 600 that followed, and offered long-travel air-assisted forks and a monoshock rear end. It was a light, road-and-trail all-rounder with drum brakes at both ends.
